listening and listening

Joanna Fursman is a Practice-based PhD researcher at Birmingham School of Art, where she studies the work of the image in pedagogy. Her methods include doing collaborative photography workshops with young people to explore how they think and feel about school.

listening and listening depicts the sound, movement, thinking, dialogue and emotion that emerged between participants in workshops with Mikhail Karikis and BA Fine Art and Art and Design students at Birmingham School of Art. In Fursman’s practice, everyone involved makes photographs, meaning the images here have appeared between the participants and from inside the collaborative process.

made in the early months of 2020, the images explore a developing relationship between Mikhail and the students during planning and filming Ferocious Love. The students' practice and thinking gently emerged through workshops, shaping and grounding the film and its production.
